Living sustainably is something we should all participate in for the benefit of our environment and the world as a whole. The choices we make, both individually and collectively, can have a significant impact on the planet, both now and in the future.

Below are some simple ways you can live more sustainably:

1. Choosing the Eco-friendly Option 🪵

Whether it’s buying items in bulk, choosing a reusable bag over a single-use plastic bag, or opting for biodegradable materials, making eco-friendly choices can make a difference.

Below are some examples of eco-friendly options:
‍
- Choosing a cotton bag over a single-use plastic bag.
- Investing in renewable energy sources, such as solar panels.
- Choosing a recyclable product over one that would otherwise be sent to landfill.
- Bringing a takeaway coffee mug to a coffee shop instead of using a disposable cup, many disposable cups are lined with plastic, making them difficult to recycle.

2. Give Old Items a New Home and Buy What Already Exists 🛒

Consider donating old items, such as clothing, furniture, and other household goods, to secondhand shops, rather than sending them to landfill.

Buying secondhand items is a great way to give preloved items a new home. It helps reduce unnessecary items being sent to landfill, while also being an affordable alternative to buying something new.

3. Check Before You Throw ♻️

Many everyday items, such as food wrappers or toiletry containers, can be recycled. Look for the recycling symbols on the packaging and check for any additional disposal instructions.

Below is an example of the disposal instructions found on an everyday product:

This photo of a deodorant canister demonstrates the correct method of disposal. In Australia, the canister can be recycled, while the capshould be put in the rubbish bin. The packaging also includes disposal instructions for New Zealand.

Many products in stores have these disposal instructions on their packaging. Next time you throw something away, have a look what it says on the back!

4. Be a Voice for the Environment 🗣️

The Earth speaks to us in many ways. Unfortunately, it's not in a language we are fluent in. Instead, we see the signs through climate change, collapsing ecosystems, habitat destruction, rising sea levels, biodiversity loss, and more. While the Earth may not have a voice of its own, we do. We can speak up and be the voice for our shared home.

Advocating for the planet doesn't have to mean grabbing a microphone and spreading the word. Sometimes, it can be as simple as offering a friendly reminder to someone, when appropriate. For example, if a friend puts a recyclable bottle in the rubbish bin, you could gently remind them that to place it in the recycling bin next time.

These seemingly small moments can have a bigger impact than we realise, creating a positive domino effect. That friend may remember your advice and pass it on one day. Small actions can inspire others, promoting more sustainable habits that spread.

5. Find What Works Best For You and Do That 🧭

Finding what works best for you and doing that is key. We all have different lifestyles and different needs. For some people, it’s easier to reduce how much they buy from fast-fashion brands, for others it’s easier to swap meat to plant-based alternatives. Each person is different.

It's a helpful tool to help gauge your impact on the environment and understand the reality of how some things have a much larger carbon footprint than others.

Every Step We Take Makes a Meaningful Difference

These are just a few ways you can live more sustainably. You don’t have to follow them all. Instead, find what works best for you and do that. We’re all human – if we occasionally use a single-use plastic bag or forget to recycle a bottle, that’s completely understandable. What matters is our commitment to caring for the environment and taking conscious steps when we can.

The actions we take ripple out towards a more sustainable future. 🌱
